Verkadalai / Ground nut / Peanut chutney



I'm love to have Verkadalai chutney for any kind of Idli or Dosa. Happy to post my favorite chutney.



To Grind

Roasted Peanut               1/2 cup

Red Chilli                       3 -4 Nos

Tamarind                       Small lemon size

Garlic                            2 -3 nos

To Temper

Mustard seeds         1 tsp

Curry leaves            5 -6 Nos


In blender blend all items under To grind with water as smooth paste and transfer into a serving bowl.

Heat oil in a pan , add mustard seeds,curry leaves. Once splutter add it to the chutney.

Serve hot with Idli or Dosa.

Jeera Rice



I'm not big fan of Jeera Rice before tasting it in one restaurant with the combination of Palak Panner.
Seriously that day Palak Paneer was really awesome. So i want to try the similar combination in home. Jeera rice can be made in a two different ways and its very simple to do. I followed this recipe from vahrehvah with slight change.





Basmathi Rice              1 cup

Cumin Seeds               1 tsp

Saffron strands            Few

Water                       2 cups

Salt to taste.


Soak the basmathi rice in water for 30 minutes before cooking. Soak saffron strands in a small amount of warm milk

Heat oil in a pan.Add cumin seeds,once sputter add 2 cups of water ,salt and bring the water to boil.

Add rice and cook up to 90% of water gets absorbed. Add saffron color

After that reduce the flame and cook util becomes dry.

Serve hot with any side dish.

Kovakkai / Tindora Fry





Kovakkai / Tindora             1 Lb

Onion                                 1 medium

Mustard seeds                    1 tsp

Turmeric powder               1/4 tsp

Sambar Powder                2 tbsp

Salt to taste



Wash kovakkai and cut into lengthwise.


Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds. Once splutter add onion and cook till it translucent.

Add kovakkai ,salt and turmeric powder and cook for 2- 3 minutes.

Once kovakkai half done, add sambar powder and cook till it get cooked and kovakkai become crispy.

Serve hot with rice.

Chicken Masala Fry




Chicken                 1 lb

Onion                    1 medium

Tomato                  1 small

Chilli powder           1 tbsp

Coriander Powder  2 tbsp

Turmeric powder    1 tsp

Ginger Garlic paste 1 tbsp

Lemon Juice            1 tsp

Salt to taste



To temper

Fennel seeds 1 tsp

Clove             2 Nos

Cinnamon      2-3 Nos

Cardamom    3 Nos

Bay Leaves   2 Nos



Clean chicken and cut into small  size. Mix turmeric powder and lemon juice with chicken and keep it aside.

Heat oil in heavy bottom pan, add tempering items. Once spices splutter add ginger garlic paste and saute well.

Add onion and cook till half done. Then add chicken,small amount of salt and cook until it turn into white color.

Now add tomato,all the spice powder, cup of water and cook till the water becomes dry.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or Roti.

Cluster beans Poriyal




Cluster Beans              2 cup

Onion                        1 Medium

Moong Dal                 3 tbsp

Green Chilli               2 Nos

Mustard seeds           1 tsp

Turmeric powder      1 tsp



Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds.Once seeds splutter add onion,green chili and cook for 4 -5 minutes.

Add cluster beans ,Turmeric powder ,salt , add 1/2 cup of water and cook until the beans well cooked.

Serve hot with rice.

Mushroom Curry







Mushroom                 1 cup (chopped)          

Onion                        1 medium

Tomato                      1 No

Chilli powder             1 tbsp

Coriander powder     2 tbsp

Turmeric powder      1 tsp

Garam Masala           1 tsp

Ginger Garlic paste    1 tbsp

Coconut paste / Cashew paste     3 tbsp

cumin seeds             1 tsp

Mustard seeds         1 tsp


Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once splutter add ginger garlic paste and cook for 2 minutes.

Add onion cook till it translucent. Add tomato, chilli powder,coriander powder and turmeric powder ,cook until raw smells goes. Add 1/2 cup of water and let it boil.

Mean while in a separate pan cook take mushroom for 2-3 minutes.

Once the gravy boils add mushroom, coconut/cashew paste and cook till mushroom get done.


Serve hot with Rice or chappathi.

Spicy cauliflower Masala - Baked






Cauliflower florets                     1 cup

Onion                                       1 medium

Tomato                                     1 No

Garlic                                        3 -4 Nos

Green Chilli                              2 Nos

Garam Masala                           1/4 tsp

Chilli Powder                            1/2 tsp

Turmeric Powder                      1/2 tsp

Lemon Juice                            1 tsp

Salt to taste

In bowl mix cauliflower florets,turmeric powder and salt.

Preheat the oven to 380 F. Spread the mix in baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes.

Heat oil in a pan , add onion and cook till it translucent.

Add garlic,green chilli,tomato ,Garam masala ,chilli powder and and cook till masala get cooked.

After add cauliflower and mix well still it coated with spices.

Add small amount water and cook till it get dry.

Finally add lemon juice.

It can be served for Roti or rice. We can stuff it in roti and can serve as a chappathi roll.

Broccoli Stir Fry



Broccoli is one of low calorie food and rich in dietary  fiber. It help to protect cancer and strokes.

So good to have a broccoli in our daily diet.




Broccoli florets            1 cup

Onion                          1 medium

Tomato                       1 Small

Chilli powder              1 tsp

Turmeric powder        1/2 tsp

Mustard Seeds

Salt to taste


Heat oil in a pan,add mustard seeds. Once sputters add onion and cook for few minutes.

Add tomato,turmeric powder,salt and chilli powder. Cook till spices get cooked.

Add broccoli florets and mix well.Cover it and cook it until florets become soft.

Sprouted Green Gram curry



Sprouted green gram is rich in protein. The sprouted lentils good for Expecting mothers and diabetic.




Sprouted Green Gram            1 cup

Onion                                    1 Medium

Tomato                                 1 No

Ginger Garlic paste               1 tbsp

Chilli powder                       1 tbsp

Coriander powder               2 tbsp

Turmeric powder               1/2 tsp

Cumin seeds                      1 tsp

Salt to taste



Pressure cook the sprouted green gram for 1 whistles.

Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds.Once the seeds splutter add onion and cook till it translucent.

Add tomato,turmeric powder,chilli powder ,coriander powder and salt. Cook for 2 - 3 minutes.

Add a cup of water and let it boil. After add cooked green gram and mix well.

If you want thick gravy mash the green gram.

Serve hot with Roti or rice.

Murungakkai / Drumstick Kootu



I'm bored of doing regular kulambu , poriyal  and curry with drumstick. My hubby gave idea to make a kootu with drumstick. The taste is really good.






Durmstick          2 cup (Cut length wise)

Moong Dal        1/4 cup

Channa Dal        1/4 cup

Turmeric powder 1 tsp

salt to taste


To paste

Green chilli          2 Nos

Red chilli             2 Nos

Cumin seeds       1/2 tbsp

Coconut shredded  1 tbsp (Optional)


To Temper

Mustard seeds     1 tsp

Curry leaves        5 -6 Nos

Urad dal              1 tsp


Pressure cook Moong dal and Channa dal for 3 hisses.

Mean while in pan cook drumstick with turmeric powder and salt.

In a blender add items under to paste and blend it as smooth paste.

Add this paste to the cooking drumstick and cook until the raw smell goes.

Finally add the cooked dal and cook for some time.

In separate pan, heat oil and do temper with items given under To temper. Pour the tempering to the cooking mixture.

Serve hot with rice or Roti.

How to sprout Green gram



Sprouted lentils are power food for all ages. Green gram have a rich protein . Sprouted green gram power pack protein rich.

Sprouts always good to take as raw. Because cooking may vanish large part of nutrition.

Sprouting lentils its a time consuming process. It will take around 48 hours.





Take desire quantity of Whole green gram and soak it in a water for overnight.

Next day morning drain the water completely and keep in a closed container at warm place.

In the next day the sprout will appear.

Enjoy the power pack protein food.

Oat-Raisin Cookies - Flour less, Butterless


I want to cookies with butter less oats cookies. Finally my search ends in here. After seeing that i want to do  it immediately. Because it requires only 5 minutes to prepare and i have all the ingredients in my pantry. So lets do the healthy Fiber rich cookie.





Rolled oats                   3/4 cup

Baking soda                 1/4 tsp

Salt                             1/8 tsp

Sugar                          3 tbsp ( I used Splenda . So adjust sugar to your taste )

Raisin                        1 tbsp

Olive Oil                    1 tbsp

Milk                         2 tbsp


Blend the oats in a blender. In a bowl mix every thing and make dough. Divide the dough into equal size balls.

Flatten the balls gently and place in cook sheet.

Preheat the oven to 350 F and cook it for 10 minutes.

Cool it down and then serve.

Onion Tomato Chutney





Onion                 1 No

Tomato               1 No

Red Chilli             3 No

Garlic                 2 -3 Cloves

salt to taste

To Temper

Mustard seeds       1 tsp

Curry leaves          5 -6 Nos


In pan take 1/2 tsp of oil , fry onions till translucent and then add tomato,red chillis and garlic.

Cool down and blend it in a blender.

Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan add the item under temper.

Now add the chutney in to the temper and cook till the oil get absorbed.

Transfer into the bowl and serve with idly or dosa.


Ragi Idly


The healthy ragi idly can be made in 2 ways. We can either use Ragi grain or ragi flour. Here i used ragi flour.



Ragi Flour            1 cup

Idly rice              1 cup

Urad Dal            1/2 cup

Fenugreek seeds  1/2 tsp



Wash and Soak Rice and urad dal for 5 -6 hours.

Grind the Rice ,Urad Dal and Fenugreek seeds as fine paste . Now add ragi flour and mix well.

Ferment for 8- hours.

Grease the Idli mould , pour the fermented batter and cook for 12 - 20 minutes.

Serve hot with the chutney or sambar.

Note:

 The same batter can be used to make Ragi dosa.
